Carved In Stone - By Jason F. Irwin
10Centuries is a way for us to keep our digital selves online long after we've left.
A thousand years is a long time. A thousand years ago Europe was deep in the Middle Ages, and King Arthur had yet to pull the Great Sword Excalibur from the stone. Africa was a land with no borders and thousands of nomadic tribes that followed their food. Asian culture was booming with China taking the lead and exerting its incredible influence on the nobility of surrounding nations. The world was flat, and neither North or South America had been visited by new peoples for thousands of years. It was a completely different world ... literally. Do you know any of your ancestors from back then?
This is the question that 10Centuries hopes to answer for our descendants in the future by making the thoughts, images, movies, and voices of people today available for the next thousand years and beyond.
From a very young age I was fascinated by family trees and hand-written diaries left behind by family members I never had the opportunity to meet. A billion questions would always spring to mind when I learned something new about some historical piece of data relevant to the ultimate question of how did I get here?. I can trace my family back only five generations. After this I am dependent on information from European archives ... many of which are either incomplete or have been lost to the sands of time. Why did my ancestors decide to leave Europe to start a new life in Canada? What were they like? What was it like to travel to a largely uninhabited, unmapped, completely wild continent half-a-world away to start something new? This type of pioneering spirit is not something I see in any of my parents, uncles, or aunts. What happened along the way?
I may never get the answers to these questions, but I want to make sure my ancestors have a way to look back and see why I made the decisions I made. I want them to have at their disposal answers to many of the questions I asked, places I've visited, and people I've known. Even if my great-great-great grandchildren visit my site just once, I will have accomplished my goal: Digital Immortality.
And I want to help you achieve the same.

When a loved one passes away they may leave decades worth of diaries and photos in well-used paper notebooks. Digitizing this collection could take anywhere from several weeks to several years, and it can bring up painful memories along the way. Most people never protect these precious memories from destruction, and many never think to look at them until time has taken its toll. Let us do the heavy work of importing these hand-written notes.
